<p>Saladworks debuted its first in-store restaurant in a Kroger grocery store. The new location debuted November 20 in Cincinnati at 7900 Beechmont Ave. Saladworks provides guests a variety of healthy and delicious items they can grab while shopping, including customizable salads, wraps, soups and more.</p>
<p>The move to open restaurants within grocery chains and other non-traditional venues began in early 2019, when Saladworks opened its first in-store location in Philadelphia. To date, Saladworks has restaurants in seven grocery stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York, with more than 10 new openings planned through Q1 of 2021.</p>
<p>Much like their stand-alone locations across the country, the new in-store restaurant focuses on customization through its array of over 60 fresh, flavorful and healthy ingredients – allowing guests to create a salad as original as they are. In addition to its Signature recipes, Saladworks offers create-your-own options, including salads, wraps, grain bowls, soups and more, including a limited assortment of Grab ‘n Go items.</p>
<p>“Grocery stores are an exciting growth area for our brand. With COVID-19 bringing safety challenges to self-serve food bars in grocery stores everywhere, guests can feel safe with Saladworks,” says Eric Lavinder, VP of Development for Saladworks. “Guests can get the same great experience and variety at a grocery location as they can a traditional restaurant.”</p>
<p>In addition to in-store orders, grocery store restaurants for Saladworks also offer shoppers the option to order online through the Saladworks website or by calling ahead for pickup. Shoppers can also have their Saladworks orders delivered using third-party delivery partners like Door Dash, GrubHub, and UberEats. Saladworks can also cater your next big gathering, from King Salads and Entertaining Trays to sandwiches and Pinwheel/Signature Wrap Parties.</p>

<p>Saladworks has spent years creating a menu that caters to everyone’s nutritional needs (vegetarian, vegan, flexitarian) and diets (Keto, Paleo, Whole 30, etc.). Saladworks has already signed five franchisee deals in the state, which will total eight restaurants to open in Thousand Oaks, San Francisco, Bakersfield, Fresno and Visalia, in addition to the newly unveiled Hollister location that opened two months ago.</p>
<p>Even with these existing deals already in place, Saladworks hopes to develop more California locations all across the state, and it’s currently finalizing several more franchisee contracts that’ll soon result in more than a handful of additional locations to open in 2021.</p>
<p>To fuel the planned growth in California, Saladworks is actively seeking qualified franchise partners, preferably individuals with business experience and/or franchise experience, and a passion for serving guests. Before stores open, the training program for franchisees is designed to teach them the fundamentals for efficient skills to run a successful restaurant and is completed locally. Franchisees learn the expectations and procedures in the four-week program through hands-on experiences covering all aspects of the business, such as food preparation, food offering, inventory management and opening/closing procedures.</p>
<p>“Since Saladworks has already branched out west and awareness of our brand is growing considerably, we’re seeing big-time demand for salads that promote active lifestyles and healthy eating that’s regarded so highly in California,” said Eric Lavinder, VP of Franchise Development. “We’re looking for more potential franchisees who are excited about our concept and want to join our health-focused family, those who can benefit from this expanding brand awareness in a less-penetrated state thus far.”</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Conshohocken-based fast-casual chain Saladworks is setting its sights on franchise expansion in its core markets of Greater Philadelphia and New Jersey as the company continues to open locations despite Covid-19.</p>
<p>Saladworks, which was founded more than 30 years ago in Cherry Hill, is aiming to launch between 15 and 20 new franchises in the region over the next nine months, Vice President of Franchise Development Eric Lavinder told the Business Journal. The brand is particularly eyeing New Jersey locales including Phillipsburg, Flemington, Ewing Township, Princeton, South Brunswick, Burlington Township and East Windsor, and the Pennsylvania towns of Trexlertown, Quakertown, Royersford, Fort Washington, Media and Springfield.</p>
<p>The national chain, which has upwards of 100 locations, has already debuted 28 new stores in 2020 with a few more slated to open. More than 20 new deals are in the pipeline for 2021. This week Saladworks also opens its first location in Canada, which will operate as a ghost kitchen, meaning it will exclusively offer takeout and delivery. Saladworks has 10 stores scheduled to launch in Canada this year, Lavinder said.</p>
<p>The company decided to refocus on its home markets when the Covid-19 pandemic pressed pause on travel, effectively thwarting tourists from coming into Greater Philadelphia and becoming newly acquainted with the brand, Lavinder noted. Saladworks locations are concentrated in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware.</p>

<p>Saladworks found a “silver lining” in going back to its roots and focusing on further growing brand awareness in the region, he said. With uncertainty around when office workers will be returning to work in the city, Saladworks is honing in on more suburban markets.</p>
<p>“We haven&#8217;t sold out our core market,” Lavinder said. “That is a huge missed opportunity for the growth of the brand.”</p>
<p>Saladworks has been “very lucky” in weathering the coronavirus storm, he said, because it falls into a niche that is “the right concept at the right time.” The fast-casual chain is not full-service and didn’t heavily rely on indoor dining pre-Covid. The food also travels well, Lavinder said, and falls under the healthy food umbrella, which he characterizes as “a huge growth category in the marketplace.”</p>
<p>Before the pandemic hit, third-party delivery and online takeout ordering were already substantial revenue drivers for the company, according to Lavinder. Only about 35% to 40% of customers were actually eating in stores, so Covid-19 dining capacity restrictions didn’t change much, or guests elected to order food via the digital channels.</p>
<p>About 80% of the company’s locations remained open when Covid-19 hit, though some operated in a limited or online-only capacity. Now nearly all of the stores are back open, Lavinder said, except for a small number in “captive audience locations” such as malls or airports.</p>
<p>The cost of operating a single Saladworks restaurant ranges from $210,607 to $534,084, according to the company’s website. The initial franchise fee for a single location is $35,000.</p>
<p>When asked about potential franchisees being wary of entering the hospitality industry during the public health crisis, Lavinder recommended they evaluate the need for the product, consider the strength of the brand and food niche, and determine how the company aligns with their own morals, goals and preferred food type. On a larger scale, he noted he’s optimistic about the company’s future as he anticipates the restaurant sector to rebound “stronger than ever” once the pandemic subsides.</p>
<p>“When you come back out of the stay-at-home we&#8217;ve been doing, there&#8217;s less restaurants, less choices &#8230; than there was before,” Lavinder said. “That only puts in more demand for products that are actually open.”</p>
<p>As Saladworks continues to develop its franchise arm, the brand seeks to diversify its locations by opening ghost kitchens as well as shops within grocery stores or at universities and military bases.</p>
<p>The company is particularly noticing demand in the grocery store segment, Lavinder said, as many grocery stores are looking to provide a healthy grab-and-go option. During Covid, that demand has only increased as many grocery stores had to close down their own salad bars under coronavirus guidelines.</p>

After the pandemic forced the restaurant she worked at to close, Rodriguez discovered Saladworks and thought it would be a perfect fit to combine her passions for restaurant management and healthy eating.</p>

<p>Saladworks, the nation’s leading fast-casual, entrée salad franchise, has opened an in-store location inside The GIANT Company grocery store in Camp Hill, PA October 12. Located at 3310 Trindle Road, Saladworks provides guests a variety of healthy and delicious items they can grab while shopping, including customizable salads, wraps, soups and more.</p>
<p>The move to open restaurants within grocery chains and other non-traditional venues began in early 2019, when Saladworks opened its first in-store location in Philadelphia. To date, Saladworks has restaurants in six grocery stores in Pennsylvania and New York, with more than 10 new openings planned through Q1 of 2021.</p>
<p>Much like their stand-alone locations across the country, the new in-store restaurant focuses on customization through its array of over 60 fresh, flavorful and healthy ingredients – allowing guests to create a salad as original as they are. In addition to its Signature recipes, Saladworks offers create-your-own options, including salads, wraps, grain bowls, soups and more, including a limited assortment of Grab ‘n Go items.</p>
<p>“With COVID-19 bringing safety challenges to self-serve food bars in grocery stores everywhere, guests can feel safe with Saladworks, since the salad bars are situated in a separate space here only staff has access,” said Eric Lavinder, VP of Development for Saladworks. “Guests can get the same great experience and variety at a grocery location as they can a traditional restaurant.”</p>
<p>In addition to in-store orders, this location will offer shoppers the option to order online through the Saladworks website or by calling ahead for pickup. Shoppers can also have their Saladworks orders delivered using third-party delivery partners like Door Dash, GrubHub, and UberEats. Saladworks can also cater your next big gathering, from King Salads and Entertaining Trays to sandwiches and Pinwheel/Signature Wrap Parties.</p>

<p>With the economy on shaky ground and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-weekly-jobless-claims-unemployment-benefits-insurance-economic-recovery-hiring-2020-9" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="20" data-uri="ba9c3ea33edb832ce04bc58a0d7215f3">unemployment growing</a>, consumers have reined in their spending. This is putting businesses in a tough spot, but marketing experts said fostering customer loyalty can help owners and leaders weather the current storm.</p>
<p>Customer loyalty centers on repeat business, but it actually goes much deeper, said Chris Groening, associate professor of marketing at <a href="https://www.kent.edu/" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="20" data-uri="12aae2632c13cfd27257c8b4d35004b9">Kent State University</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;Would your customers inconvenience themselves?&#8221; he said. &#8220;That means, would they pay more for your product than for a similar product from another company? If so, then they&#8217;re being loyal. Would they drive further passing the competitors store to buy the product? If so, then that&#8217;s loyalty.&#8221;</p>
<p>As more than a third of businesses are in danger of permanently closing because of pandemic disruption, according to <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/americas/which-small-businesses-are-most-vulnerable-to-covid-19-and-when" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="20" data-uri="70d68eb205b26b6806e22bd485c16efe">McKinsey &amp; Company estimates</a>, keeping customers coming back is a must for survival. Here&#8217;s how to do it.</p>
<h2><strong>Build trust with existing customers by creating emotional connections</strong></h2>
<p><a href="https://hbr.org/2014/10/the-value-of-keeping-the-right-customers" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="40" data-uri="84076d3679c9bb78da220e337ca4e915">Retaining existing customers</a> is more cost-effective than acquiring new ones — these days, there may be fewer customers to acquire anyway — and building and maintaining trust equates to customer loyalty and retention, said Raji Srinivasan, marketing professor and associate dean of diversity and inclusion at the University of Texas at Austin <a href="https://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="40" data-uri="41a52777336d3a624dcc73b8cc27e7c5">McCombs School of Business</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;Companies should take the long view of customers — [creating] customers for life — instead of a more short-term view of customers with a focus on this period&#8217;s sales,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>According to the <a href="https://www.edelman.com/research/brand-trust-2020" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="40" data-uri="f2a972e5b05f2822e25e8b2867a3ee25">Edelman &#8220;Trust Barometer Special Report: Brand Trust in 2020</a>,&#8221; more than half of consumers said that besides price, &#8220;whether you trust the company that owns the brand or brand that makes the product&#8221; was the most important factor in deciding what to purchase. And 70% said trusting a brand is more important now than in the past.</p>
<p>Trust and customer loyalty have been especially important for the restaurant industry, among the hardest hit by the pandemic.</p>
<p>&#8220;Given changing demographics and the availability of convenient food choices — meal kits, grocery stores, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-brands-ghost-kitchens-pivot-operations-compete-delivery-apps-2020-7" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="40" data-uri="ee7f341e89fdf5c56299cc3e2b11d745">ghost kitchens</a>, and food trucks — the competition for guests&#8217; dining-out business has intensified,&#8221; said Mark Mears, chief marketing officer for <a href="/" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="40" data-uri="7fec6a17879393a0f04e928dae495e12">Saladworks</a>, a casual build-your-own salad restaurant franchise.</p>
<p>The company has lately focused on creating emotional connections with customers by promoting relevant services, like digital and easier takeout ordering, he said. This lets customers know that the company cares about their needs during the crisis and has boosted sales, now up more than 20% over last year, with digital sales growing to account for 30% of sales overall, Mears said.</p>
<p>&#8220;For any brand, the key to maintaining loyalty will always come down to trust and performance,&#8221; Mears said, adding that the most loyal customers tend to be the most profitable ones in the long run.</p>
<h2><strong>Meet customers&#8217; evolving needs with stellar customer service and online offerings</strong></h2>
<p>The pandemic has changed how people shop and what they buy. According to a <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/marketing-and-sales/our-insights/survey-us-consumer-sentiment-during-the-coronavirus-crisis" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="60" data-uri="6c57e0000e536d0089af157b80321b15">McKinsey &amp; Co. survey</a> conducted in August, nearly 80% of Americans said the pandemic led them to try a new shopping behavior, such as trying a new shopping method or brands or visiting new places.</p>
<p>How companies and brands address customers&#8217; new habits and circumstances fosters loyalty, Srinivasan said. &#8220;Can your company help customers navigate their lives better in some way?&#8221; Srinivasan said. &#8220;Can your product portfolio be modified to address customers&#8217; immediate needs?&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.westhavenpower.com/" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="60" data-uri="b696426080cbe610a7c057b603bcf39b">Westhaven Power</a>, a northern California-based provider of solar energy products, battery storage, and generators, has worked to meet the rising consumer demand for reliable energy as more people are working and studying from home — especially in high-risk areas like the West Coast, where wildfires and blackouts are common, said Brett Joerger, the company&#8217;s CEO.</p>
<p>In March, the company released a <a href="https://blog.westhavenpower.com/continuing-operations-through-coronavirus" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="60" data-uri="9e77654da634726211c373735d8bae13">blog post</a> explaining its essential service status and the steps it had taken to protect the health and safety of its team and customers, and started conducting services virtually and promoted the ability to install most systems within a day.</p>
<p>Westhaven Power also began offering free home energy risk assessments by phone to help homeowners optimize their energy efficiency, offered $1,000 discounts to homeowners who bundled solar and battery storage, and launched a new home backup product to maximize energy efficiency, Joerger said.</p>
<p>Recently, he said more than 75% of the company&#8217;s revenue has come from existing customers, including referrals.</p>
<p>&#8220;Businesses rely on customer loyalty to generate a revenue stream during times of uncertainty,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Where stay-at-home orders are still enforced and jobs furloughed, customers are less likely to spend with businesses they do not trust, who are not consistent on service, or cannot offer online or non-store sales.&#8221;</p>
<h2><strong>Communicate your mission and how it aligns with societal issues</strong></h2>
<p>From the pandemic and economic crisis to ongoing political divisiveness and Black Lives Matter protests for equality and against police brutality, so much is going on these days. Businesses and brands are sharing their stances on these issues and taking action, a move that&#8217;s resonating with customers.</p>
<p>Edelman&#8217;s <a href="https://www.edelman.com/research/brand-trust-2020" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="80" data-uri="f2a972e5b05f2822e25e8b2867a3ee25">brand trust survey</a> found that more than 80% of consumers want brands to solve their and society&#8217;s problems, and 90% want brands to protect their own employees amid the pandemic, even if it means taking a financial hit.</p>
<p>A business&#8217; charitable giving also influences more than 70% of consumer buying, according to a <a href="https://www.mintel.com/press-centre/social-and-lifestyle/givingtuesday-73-of-americans-consider-companies-charitable-work-when-making-a-purchase" data-analytics-module="body_link" data-analytics-post-depth="80" data-uri="57f03ee30eaef953e946469a3e5b66e4">2018 Mintel report</a>. Half of consumers would switch to a brand that supports the causes they believe in, a sentiment that&#8217;s higher among millennials and Gen Zers.</p>
<p>Saladworks recently involved customers in fundraising drives for No Kid Hungry and to feed frontline healthcare workers, Mears said. The restaurants donated a portion of sales and offered free meal coupons to customers who made a donation.</p>

<h2><strong>Delight, don&#8217;t just satisfy</strong></h2>
<p>Connecting with consumers emotionally is one of the most effective ways to cultivate loyalty, Groening said. Companies can do this by creating a sense of community or belonging among their customers and making sure their product or service delights customers.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a Mac person, or I drink Coca-Cola, that sort of thing,&#8221; Groening said. &#8220;If you can somehow get to that level where it&#8217;s hard [for people] to imagine life without this brand, it makes [customers] feel emotionally attached. When you have that emotional attachment, people will stick with you.&#8221;</p>
<p>Customers feel more attached to companies that &#8220;delight&#8221; rather than simply satisfy, Groening said. &#8220;Delight is that surprise, that unexpected interaction, and when it&#8217;s a surprise, it breaks you out of the normal routine interaction with that company,&#8221; he said. For example, remembering customers&#8217; names or their regular orders, offering free items, or checking in with them after a purchase.</p>
<p>&#8220;The brands who focus on delivering a unique and differentiated guest experience will stand out from the sea of sameness and provide reasons for their guests to come back again and again,&#8221; Mears said.</p>

<h2>Lots are popping up before the end of 2020!</h2>
<p>The coronavirus pandemic has hit restaurants with salad bars and buffets hard. Even though there is <a href="https://www.eatthis.com/only-way-to-contract-coronavirus-while-grocery-shopping/">no evidence</a> that the virus can spread on surfaces, food sitting out in public as people come and go isn&#8217;t very appealing. In June, one <a href="https://www.eatthis.com/souplantation-closes/">buffet-style chain announced</a> they are closing their almost 100 restaurants for good.</p>
<p>Unlike Souplantation, one salad chain is actually <i>adding</i> locations. Saladworks has already opened more than 20 new locations in this year alone. That&#8217;s not all, though — 20 to 30 more are supposedly going to open before 2021. Three states will get their first, making Saladworks salads, wraps, soups, and more available at over 115 locations in 26 states across the country, according to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/garystern/2020/09/02/saladworks-partnership-with-shoprite-creating-a-new-revenue-stream/#10f0f22c7266">Forbes</a>.</p>
<p>The new additions come after the restaurant entered into a partnership with ShopRite grocery stores before the pandemic. Four supermarkets in areas of Philadelphia and Baltimore considered to be &#8220;low-income areas&#8221; already have the restaurant. Two more are coming to stores in Philadelphia and two are opening in Staten Island, New York. All four will be open by November, the publication reports. More locations are also coming to a  grocery chain in the Northeast later in the year. However, specifics are still unknown.</p>
<p>Compared to the main restaurant locations, Saladworks in supermarkets only serve salads. In case customers are hesitant to order from the chain, there are no buffet options available. Employees make the salads in a glass-lined kiosk.</p>
<p>Restaurants are already using glass dividers to separate tables outdoors, too. But as the virus continues to spread and dining inside in the fall becomes less likely, <a href="https://www.eatthis.com/new-things-restaurants-fall/">expect to see things like</a> blankets, space heaters, and more comfortable furniture when you&#8217;re dining al fresco. You may also notice warmer comfort foods making their way onto menus, too, to keep you toasty as the weather gets chillier.</p>

<p><strong>Salad bar eateries are facing tough times during the pandemic. In fact, Sweet Tomatoes, a soup and salad buffet franchise with 97 locations, shuttered during the pandemic.</strong></p>
<p><strong>But Saladworks, another salad specialist, has established a partnership with ShopRite supermarkets that establishes a new revenue stream. Saladworks has 114 locations, and is mostly franchised, with only seven of them company-owned.</strong></p>
<p><strong>It’s located in 23 states and expanding to three new states in 2020. It’s opened 23 new Saladworks in 2020 with another 20 to 30 projected to open by end of year.</strong></p>
<p><strong>So far, Saladworks is selling its salad specialties in four ShopRite locations, three located in Philadelphia and one in Baltimore. And four more are on the way, including two more in Philadelphia and two in Staten Island, N.Y. going live in October and November.</strong></p>
<p><strong>The salad bars are situated in a separate kiosk where only staff has access to the food to ensure safety.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Saladworks pays rent to ShopRite so that both parties have vested interests in their mutual success. Opening more locations is dependent on ShopRite’s owners agreeing to the partnership but Saladworks is exploring partnerships with other national chains (more about that later).</strong></p>
<p><strong>But the partnership with Shoprite started pre-pandemic, explained Kelly Roddy, the CEO of Saladworks, based in Conshohocken, Pa. “There were more restaurants on the street than ever before,” said Roddy.</strong></p>
<p><strong>“We started looking to go into places where no had restaurant had gone,” he said. Why not place them in supermarkets?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Its partnership with ShopRite places the four Saladworks in mostly low-income neighborhoods in Philadelphia and Baltimore, “where some brands won’t go,” Roddy noted. Most of these neighborhoods are referred to as “food deserts,” he said, because they lack healthy food.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Shoprite’s owners were dedicated to their working-class neighborhoods and wanted to bring healthy food to them. Moreover, bringing in a Saladworks’ kiosk would differentiate them from their many supermarket competitors.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Pre-pandemic, Roddy emphasizes, its goal was to “get ourselves in front of a potential guest at lower real-estate price and, in a way, to serve the community.”</strong></p>
<p><strong>Post-pandemic, when indoor dining is prohibited in most cities, it’s become “not a side project, but a real opportunity. It’s become a need because they’ve closed buffet salad bars in most supermarkets,” Roddy noted.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Saladworks has learned to streamline its menu in supermarkets, which reduces spoilage and keeps its costs down. Unlike in its stand-alone restaurants, it doesn’t sell soups or sandwiches, just salads.</strong></p>
<p><strong>To ensure safety, only its employees handle the salads, not the customers, and they’re in special kiosks with glass partitions. Their staff follows National Restaurant Association guidelines including wearing masks, changing gloves every several hours, and temperature checks for staff.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Asked why people order a salad from Saladworks in a supermarket when they could buy the ingredients there and prepare them at home, Roddy replied, “Most people don’t want to roast their peppers, or buy goat cheese for one-time use, or use the Chipotle ranch dressing, which will sit in the refrigerator for a long time.”</strong></p>
<p><strong>The ShopRite partnership has fared so well that Saladworks has signed another agreement with a Northeast chain (which hasn’t granted permission to publicize it) that will start before Thanksgiving. And it’s signed a third partnership with a large national chain, opening six salad bars. before Thanksgiving as well.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Most of Saladworks’ locations were forced to close in mid-march when Covid became known and started to spread. But most Saladworks stayed open for pickup and delivery, except for the ones located in malls that were forced to close.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Saladworks’ 114 restaurants are bouncing back. Based on their doing carry out meals, digital sales and an upswing in third party deliveries, they’re doing about 80% of their normal revenue. </strong></p>
<p><strong>“We saw the shift coming,” and stepped up agreements with several third-party deliverers. “It takes several months to get everything in place,” Roddy acknowledged. </strong></p>
<p><strong>Saladworks has continued to grow at a steady pace. It’s already opened 25 new stores so far in 2020, and Roddy sees about 22 or more coming before year’s end, including a dozen located in supermarkets, eight stand alone, and two college locations.</strong></p>
<p><strong>What does it take to thrive during a pandemic for Saladworks? Roddy replied, “having all the digital tools up and running” is a good start. Opening in supermarkets to create a new revenue stream was another boost.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Next up, he says are ghost kitchens, where food is ordered for take-out from a central location. The trick is learning to be adaptive.</strong></p>
